Thomas Markle Appears in Court After FBI Arrest Over Alleged Child Abuse Images — Judge Orders Electronic Monitoring

Thomas Markle, the estranged father of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, has appeared in a Florida federal court following his arrest on a charge of possessing child sexual abuse material. The 82-year-old was brought into court in a wheelchair on November 6, 2026, just hours after FBI agents arrested him at a retirement facility in Lakeland, Florida. His brief appearance marked a major development in an investigation spanning the United States, the Philippines and Mexico.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Markle is accused of keeping sexually explicit images involving children in two storage units in the Los Angeles area. Investigators reportedly seized approximately 78 items, including photographic slides, film negatives and books. The federal complaint describes images allegedly showing Markle with nude prepubescent girls, as well as other images involving children. Authorities say the storage units had been rented by Markle since around 2008.

During the court appearance, Markle confirmed that he understood the allegations and his legal rights but did not enter a plea. The judge ordered an evaluation of his ability to understand the proceedings. He was subsequently released under strict conditions, including home detention and electronic monitoring. He was also prohibited from accessing the internet and smart devices, according to reports. His next court proceedings are expected to take place in California, where the alleged material was discovered.

The investigation reportedly began after Markle’s son, Thomas Markle Jr., said he discovered suspected child sexual abuse material among his father’s belongings in the Philippines and alerted authorities. The FBI later traced information to the California storage units and obtained search warrants. Mexican authorities have also searched a property previously linked to Markle in Baja California, reportedly seizing electronic devices and other items. Investigations in the Philippines are continuing separately, with officials examining material allegedly found there.

The case has also drawn attention because of Markle’s estrangement from his daughter, Meghan. The Duchess previously said she was deeply distressed by the allegations and expressed concern for any children who may have been harmed. She also said her decision to keep her father away from her own children was made to protect them. Markle has denied the accusations, previously describing them as “sick lies.”

If convicted of the federal possession charge, Markle could face a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. However, the criminal complaint contains allegations, not proof of guilt, and he remains presumed innocent unless convicted in court. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not yet established the outcome of the separate inquiries overseas.
