Trapped In A Fishing Net On A Stormy Shore, A Tiny Seal Pup Waits For Help

A small gray seal pup, soaked by rain and sea spray, was found stranded among dark, wet rocks as waves crashed around him. A green fishing net, discarded and left behind, was tangled loosely around his body and flippers, holding him in place on the slippery shoreline.
In the distance, a rescue boat waited beyond the breakers while fishing boats and a harbor wall faded into the gray storm clouds. Closer to shore, the pup looked up with large, dark eyes, his whiskers wet, his fur matted, and his breathing quick with fear.
The rescuer, wearing a bright yellow marine rescue jacket, black waterproof gloves, and a red safety harness, approached slowly and crouched beside him. There was no rush and no force. Both hands moved carefully toward the tangled strands, keeping a safe distance from the pup’s head while checking how the net was wrapped around his body.
Loop by loop, the net was loosened and lifted away from his flippers. The pup shifted slightly on the rocks but stayed close, as if he understood that help had finally arrived. When the last section of net came free, the rescuer pulled both hands back and gave him space.
Free at last, the little seal began to move toward the shoreline, away from the rope that had held him down.
It is a quiet reminder of a much bigger problem. Abandoned fishing gear, often called ghost gear, continues to trap seals, turtles, seabirds, and other marine animals long after it is lost or thrown away. For this one pup, on this one stormy day, someone stopped, knelt down, and took the time to set him free.
