Walmart Employee Fatally Shot in Parking Lot Days After Her 45th Birthday
A 45-year-old Walmart employee was shot and killed in the store’s parking lot in Pennsylvania just days after celebrating her birthday. Authorities say a masked gunman approached Latosha Ann Cooper as she prepared to leave work late Wednesday night, October 21, 2026.

The shooting happened outside the Walmart on Easton Road in the Glenside section of Cheltenham Township, Montgomery County. Investigators are working to identify the shooter and determine a possible motive.
A Deadly Attack After Her Shift
Police were dispatched to the Walmart parking lot at approximately 11:24 p.m. on October 21 after reports of a shooting.
According to Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin R. Steele and Cheltenham Police Chief Richard Schaffer, Cooper had just finished her shift and was standing near her car when a masked individual approached and shot her.
Cooper was found on the ground beside a white Nissan. Investigators also observed a bullet hole in the vehicle’s rear door, according to local media reports.
She was taken to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Authorities scheduled an autopsy as part of the investigation.
She Had Celebrated Her Birthday Just Two Days Earlier
Cooper turned 45 on October 19, just two days before the fatal shooting.
According to her family, she leaves behind three children and three grandchildren. Her death has left loved ones grieving a loss that came shortly after what should have been a joyful milestone.
The circumstances surrounding her final moments have also raised urgent questions about why she was targeted and whether the shooting was connected to her workplace or personal life. Authorities have not publicly established a motive, and it remains unclear whether Cooper knew the gunman.
Police Search for the Masked Gunman
As of October 24, investigators had not publicly identified a suspect or announced an arrest.
Authorities are asking anyone who witnessed the shooting or has information that could help identify the person responsible to come forward. The investigation is being handled by Montgomery County Detectives and Cheltenham Township Police.
Officials have urged potential witnesses to contact Montgomery County Detectives at 610-278-3368 or Cheltenham Police at 215-885-1600, extension 499. Anonymous tips can be provided through Cheltenham Police at extension 777.
Walmart Responds to the Tragedy
Walmart expressed condolences following Cooper’s death and confirmed that the company was cooperating with law enforcement.
“We’re heartbroken by what occurred outside our Wyncote, PA, store last night,” the company said in a statement shared with PEOPLE.
The retailer also said it was providing on-site mental health resources for employees affected by the shooting. The store remained closed on Friday, October 23, according to a Walmart representative cited by PEOPLE.
Investigation Remains Ongoing
The killing has left Cooper’s family facing a devastating loss while investigators work to establish what happened and who was responsible.
For now, many key questions remain unanswered, including the motive for the attack and whether the shooter had any prior connection to Cooper.
Authorities continue to seek information from the public. Until investigators release further findings, the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting remain under investigation.
