Massachusetts Mother Cries in Court as She Faces Two Murder Charges in Deaths of Her Young Children, Ages 6 and 7

A Massachusetts mother broke down in tears during a court appearance this week as she faced two first-degree murder charges in the deaths of her young children. Janette MacAusland, 49, appeared in Norfolk Superior Court on November 3, 2026, and pleaded not guilty to the deaths of her 7-year-old son, Kai, and 6-year-old daughter, Ella. The case has drawn widespread attention because of the disturbing medical findings surrounding the children’s deaths and the circumstances in which their bodies were discovered inside the family’s home in Wellesley.

The children were found dead on April 24, 2026, after MacAusland allegedly arrived at her aunt’s home in Bennington, Vermont, in an extremely distressed condition. Police said she had a visible injury to her neck and appeared to have attempted suicide. According to court documents, she allegedly told her aunt that she had killed her children. When officers questioned her, she reportedly admitted to strangling them and said she had wanted the three of them to “go to God together,” but that her own suicide attempt had failed. Authorities then contacted police in Massachusetts, who conducted a welfare check at the family’s Wellesley residence and discovered Kai and Ella.

The medical examiner’s findings, released months later, added another heartbreaking dimension to the case. Both children died from mechanical asphyxia and the combined effects of several substances in their systems. The substances identified included zolpidem, a prescription sleep medication, along with lorazepam, acetaminophen and ibuprofen. Investigators have not publicly disclosed every detail of the alleged events inside the home, but the medical findings became an important part of the case as prosecutors prepared to pursue the murder charges.

During Tuesday’s hearing, MacAusland was seen crying quietly, bowing her head and squeezing her eyes shut. Her attorney, Joseph Krowski Jr., described her as inconsolable and said she was emotionally devastated. He also raised concerns about her history of mental health conditions and treatment, arguing that her mental health should be considered as the case moves forward. His comments do not change the charges, but they indicate that her psychological condition may become an important issue in the legal proceedings.

The family had reportedly been experiencing serious difficulties before the children’s deaths. Court records indicate that MacAusland’s husband filed for divorce in October 2025 and sought full custody of Kai and Ella, as well as ownership of the family home. The couple’s separation and custody dispute have drawn attention as investigators and reporters examine the broader circumstances surrounding the tragedy. However, the existence of a divorce or custody dispute does not, by itself, establish a motive for the alleged killings.

MacAusland has been ordered held without bail as the case proceeds. She was indicted last month on two counts of first-degree murder, and her next court hearing is scheduled for December 16. For the children’s school and the Wellesley community, the loss of Kai and Ella remains deeply painful. School officials previously described the siblings as bright young students who had meaningful connections with classmates and adults around them. As the case moves through court, their names remain at the center of a tragedy that has left a community grieving two young lives cut short.
