BI Director Accuses Thomas Markle of Targeting Children as Meghan’s Father Faces Federal Charges
Thomas Markle, the estranged father of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, is facing a serious federal criminal charge in the United States after FBI agents arrested him at a care facility in Florida. The 82-year-old has been charged with one count of possessing child sexual abuse material, following an investigation that reportedly uncovered dozens of suspected items in storage units he had rented in California for nearly two decades. FBI Director Kash Patel issued a forceful statement about the case, accusing Markle of allegedly targeting children and seeking to exploit their innocence.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, investigators searched two storage units in the Los Angeles area linked to Markle and seized approximately 78 items, including photographic slides, film negatives and books. Authorities allege that some of the material contained images of child sexual abuse. The federal complaint states that two images allegedly showed an adult man, identified by a witness as Markle, with a nude prepubescent girl. Another image reportedly depicted a young girl in a room believed to be part of a hotel or motel chain in the Philippines. Investigators are continuing to examine the seized material.
The investigation reportedly began after Markle’s son, Thomas Markle Jr., contacted authorities in the Philippines and the FBI. He said he had discovered suspected illegal images among his father’s belongings at a former residence in Cebu City. Information provided to investigators allegedly led them to the storage units in California, where records showed Markle had rented space since 2008. The case has also attracted attention overseas: Mexican authorities reportedly searched a property linked to Markle in Baja California and seized electronic devices and other materials as part of a separate investigation.

Markle was arrested at the Florida facility where he had been living and subsequently appeared before a federal magistrate judge in Tampa. He was released while awaiting further proceedings, subject to home detention and electronic monitoring. No plea was entered during his initial appearance, and an arraignment is not expected for several weeks. The case is expected to proceed in California, where the alleged material was found. If convicted of the federal charge, he could face up to 20 years in prison.
The allegations have also reopened public discussion about the long-standing estrangement between Markle and his daughter. Meghan previously said she was deeply distressed by the claims and that her thoughts were with any children who may have been harmed. She explained that her decision to keep her father away from her own children was made to protect them. The Duchess has been estranged from him since the period surrounding her 2018 wedding to Prince Harry.
Markle has denied the allegations, previously describing them as lies and insisting he could never do what he was accused of. The FBI and prosecutors have stressed the seriousness of the investigation, but the allegations have not yet been tested at trial. For now, the 82-year-old remains under court-ordered restrictions as investigators continue examining evidence and authorities in multiple countries pursue related inquiries.
