SANDRA BIRCHMORE CASE GOES TO TRIAL — FORMER POLICE OFFICER ACCUSED OF KILLING WOMAN HE ALLEGEDLY GROOMED AS A TEEN
More than five years after Sandra Birchmore was found dead inside her Massachusetts apartment, the case surrounding her death is finally heading to trial — and prosecutors are preparing to present a disturbing story involving an alleged yearslong relationship that began when Birchmore was still a teenager.

Jury selection began on October 6 in the federal trial of Matthew Farwell, a former Massachusetts police officer accused of killing Birchmore and making her death appear to be a suicide. Farwell, now 40, has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Birchmore was just 23 when she died in February 2021. She was also pregnant at the time. Her death was initially ruled a suicide after she was discovered inside her Canton apartment with a luggage strap around her neck. But years later, an FBI investigation raised new questions about what had actually happened.

According to prosecutors, Birchmore first met Farwell through the Stoughton Police Explorers program when she was only 12. Farwell was a volunteer instructor in the youth program. Investigators allege that their relationship later became sexual when Birchmore was 15 and that Farwell continued to exert control over her for years.
The case took an even more troubling turn after Birchmore became pregnant. Prosecutors allege that Farwell became increasingly concerned that their relationship could be exposed. They claim that he ultimately killed Birchmore to prevent her from revealing information about the alleged abuse and then staged the scene to make it look like she had taken her own life.
Farwell’s defense tells a very different story. His attorneys maintain that Birchmore died by suicide and have pointed to her history of previous suicide attempts. DNA testing also determined that Farwell was not the biological father of Birchmore’s unborn child, despite prosecutors alleging that Birchmore had believed he was the father.

Now, jurors are expected to hear years of messages and other evidence as both sides present their versions of what happened in the final days of Birchmore’s life. The trial is expected to last several weeks, potentially bringing long-hidden details of the relationship into the courtroom.
What really happened inside Sandra Birchmore’s apartment that night? And what evidence led investigators to question the original conclusion that her death was a suicide?
