TEXAS MOTHER SENTENCED TO 25 YEARS IN PRISON AFTER 12-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER DIED FOLLOWING FOUR DAYS WITHOUT MEDICAL CARE

Denise Balbaneda, 38, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison in connection with the death of her 12-year-old daughter, Miranda Sipps, a junior high school cheerleader in Texas. Miranda died in August 2024 after suffering a serious neck injury that left her unconscious and unable to care for herself. Instead of immediately seeking emergency medical treatment, authorities said, her mother and stepfather kept her at home for four days, attempting to care for her themselves as the girl’s condition deteriorated.

According to investigators, Miranda suffered life-threatening injuries on August 8, 2024. She reportedly remained largely unconscious, able to make only limited movements, while lying on a makeshift bedding area inside the family’s home in Christine, Texas. Authorities said her parents did not take her to a hospital during those four days, despite her critical condition. The circumstances surrounding how she initially sustained the fatal injury have not been fully detailed in public reports, but investigators emphasized that the failure to obtain timely medical care was central to the criminal case.

Atascosa County Sheriff David Soward said the parents allegedly tried to nurse Miranda back to health by giving her smoothies containing vitamins and supplements. They reportedly also obtained oxygen for her at one point. However, Miranda was so severely incapacitated that she could not swallow normally. Investigators said the family continued trying to manage the situation at home rather than calling for emergency assistance. On August 12, when Miranda went into respiratory distress, her mother finally contacted 911.

Emergency responders transported Miranda to Methodist Hospital Atascosa, where medical staff attempted to treat her. Despite their efforts, she was pronounced dead that evening. An autopsy later identified trauma to her neck. The sheriff said parents have a responsibility to obtain medical care for a child who is seriously injured, regardless of how the injury occurred. The delay in seeking treatment became a central issue in the prosecution’s case.

Balbaneda was indicted in connection with the child’s death and ultimately reached a plea agreement rather than proceeding to trial. On October 20, 2026, she was sentenced to 25 years in prison after pleading guilty to injury to a child with intent to cause serious bodily injury. Her husband, 42-year-old Gerald Gonzales, was also charged in the case and is scheduled to appear for sentencing on November 5, according to reports. His case remains separate, and the outcome of his proceedings will be determined by the court.

Miranda’s death has drawn renewed attention to the importance of recognizing medical emergencies and seeking immediate professional help when a child is seriously injured. Authorities have said the case was not simply about how the injury occurred, but also about the failure to provide necessary medical care over several days. For Miranda’s family and community, the loss of a young girl who had not yet reached her teenage years remains a devastating tragedy.
