A Frightened Fawn in a Flooding Ditch Gets a Second Chance on a Rainy Morning

On a cold and rainy morning on November 24, 2024, bodycam footage captured a tense rescue beside a rural road, where a small spotted fawn was trapped in a narrow drainage ditch filled with rushing brown floodwater.
The fawn, its brown coat soaked and its white spots still clear through the rain, struggled to keep its footing as water surged around its legs and belly. Its large ears were raised and its wide eyes stayed fixed on the rescuer, frightened but still holding on.
The rescuer, wearing a dark green waterproof jacket, black gloves and a rescue harness, knelt carefully on the slippery muddy bank. Moving slowly so as not to startle the young animal, the rescuer steadied himself against the bank and reached out with both gloved hands.
In the most delicate part of the rescue, the rescuer gently supported the fawn’s chest and torso, keeping its legs free and its head above the water. Water dripped from its spotted coat as it was lifted out of the strongest current and carried toward the grassy bank above the ditch.
Once placed on stable ground, the fawn paused, regained its balance and looked briefly toward the camera. Behind it, the flooded ditch kept rushing downhill, and a white rescue utility truck with flashing amber lights stood parked farther up the wet road.
The footage ends on a quiet moment of relief: a young wild animal, moments earlier fighting the flood, now standing on solid ground again.
The rescue is also a reminder for anyone who comes across wildlife in floodwater. Keep a safe distance, move slowly, and contact local wildlife rescuers when an animal is in immediate danger, because a calm and careful approach can make all the difference.
