Trapped in Ropes on a Stormy Harbor Pier, an Exhausted Sea Turtle Gets a Second Chance

On a storm battered harbor pier, with waves crashing over the breakwater and fishing boats rocking violently nearby, a large sea turtle lay tangled in ropes, fishing line and seaweed, wet, exhausted and barely moving.
The footage, timestamped 2024-09-22 14:09:46, shows the moment a rescuer in a red marine jacket, black gloves and yellow rope gear kneels beside the animal. With both hands, the rescuer carefully assesses the tangle before loosening the ropes wrapped around the turtle’s flipper and shell area, working slowly to avoid causing further injury.
At one point, the turtle lifts its head slightly and blinks, a small but powerful sign that it is still fighting. Water splashes across the wet concrete as the wind drives spray over the pier, yet the turtle remains weak but calm while the debris is pulled away piece by piece.
By the end of the clip, the rescuer is still supporting the turtle and turning it slightly toward a safer position on the pier. The animal, which had looked so distressed at the start, begins to look calmer as the last of the entangling material is removed.
The rescue is a stark reminder of the danger posed by discarded fishing gear and marine debris. Ropes and lines left in the water can trap sea turtles, cut into their skin, restrict their movement and leave them unable to feed or escape predators. Experts urge fishers and harbor visitors to secure gear, take broken lines home, and report entangled wildlife to local rescue teams rather than pulling at tight lines themselves.
For this turtle, on this stormy pier, help arrived in time.
