A Soaked White Rabbit, A Flooded Greenhouse, And The Gentle Hands That Reached For It

On the morning of September 5, 2024, rain hammered the glass walls and roof of a storm damaged greenhouse. Inside, muddy water had already swallowed the floor. Pots lay overturned, plants floated in the debris, and gardening supplies drifted past the metal shelves.
On one of those shelves, above the rising water, a small white rabbit crouched low. Its fur was soaked through and clumped together, its body tense, its eyes fixed on every movement in the room. There was nowhere else for it to go.
Then a rescuer waded in. Wearing a dark green waterproof jacket, black gloves, and yellow rope gear, the rescuer moved slowly through the floodwater, careful not to startle the frightened animal. Step by step, the distance closed. One gloved hand reached out, steady and patient, while the rabbit watched, alert but still.
The rescue itself was quiet and gentle. Both hands supported the rabbit, lifting it carefully from the shelf. Droplets fell back into the murky water below as the small, trembling body was held securely away from the flood. For the first time, the rabbit began to calm.
Turning toward the greenhouse exit, the rescuer carried the rabbit past broken pots and drifting plant debris, out of the water that had trapped it. Outside the flooded floor, the danger was finally behind it.
It was a small rescue, captured in a single continuous shot from a chest mounted bodycam. But for one soaked rabbit on a metal shelf, it was everything.
