Rescuer Lifts Frightened Duckling to Safety as Rain Floods Subway Stairs

A frightened duckling found alone in a flooded subway stairwell was carried to safety on Monday morning, October 26, 2026, after heavy rain turned the entrance into a rushing stream.
The small bird, its yellow and brown down soaked through, was balancing on a narrow concrete step while water poured down the stairs and into the underground passage. With the current growing stronger, it had little space left and no clear escape route.
A rescuer wearing a navy blue waterproof jacket, black gloves, and a rescue harness moved in carefully, crouching on a stable part of the staircase. Rather than grabbing at the bird, the rescuer reached out slowly and gave the duckling time to settle.
Once the duckling was gently cupped in both hands, it was lifted away from the water and held close and secure. The rescuer then climbed toward the street level entrance, where the rain was still falling but the ground was dry.
Bodycam footage of the rescue ends with the duckling safe in the rescuer’s hands, a quiet reminder that even the smallest life is worth stopping for.
