British Man, 73, Faces 25 Years in Prison Over Wife’s Death in Spain
Michael John C. denies murdering his wife, Vanessa Elizabeth, 57, whose body was found outside their home near Murcia in December 2022. Prosecutors allege he fatally assaulted her, while the defense maintains her death was a tragic accident.

A 73-year-old British man is facing a potential 25-year prison sentence in Spain over the death of his wife, who was found outside their home in Camposol, near Murcia, in December 2022.
The defendant, identified as Michael John C., has been charged with aggravated murder. Prosecutors allege that he attacked Vanessa Elizabeth, 57, following an argument after the couple had spent the day drinking at local pubs.
However, Michael denies murdering his wife. His defense claims she was accidentally struck by their vehicle as he reversed into their property.
Prosecutors Allege Fatal Assault
According to the prosecution, the couple had been drinking beer and wine before an argument escalated outside their home.
Prosecutors allege Michael struck Vanessa repeatedly, causing her to fall to the ground, and continued the assault while she was on the ground. She suffered fatal injuries, including trauma to the head.
The prosecution is seeking a 25-year prison sentence if he is convicted.

Defense Claims Her Death Was an Accident
Michael’s lawyer disputes the prosecution’s account, arguing that Vanessa got out of the couple’s vehicle to prevent their dogs from escaping when they arrived home.
The defense claims Michael reversed the vehicle without realizing Vanessa was nearby. According to his lawyer, he later got out and found her lying motionless and bleeding near the curb.
His legal team is seeking an acquittal, arguing that he had no intention of killing his wife. Alternatively, the defense is asking the court to consider a lesser conviction of manslaughter, with alcohol consumption taken into account as a mitigating factor.
The court will have to assess the competing accounts and evidence before reaching a verdict.
Previous Domestic Violence Complaints
The case has also raised questions about the couple’s history of domestic violence reports.
According to the reporting, Vanessa had made five complaints to police between 2007 and 2014. Protective measures were reportedly introduced in 2007 but were no longer active by 2015.
Victoria Rosell, Spain’s government delegate against gender violence, expressed condolences to Vanessa’s family and acknowledged that safeguards can sometimes fail.
Trial Continues
The trial began on Friday, October 23, 2026. Michael is expected to testify on October 30.
He remains accused of aggravated murder, but the allegations have not been proven in court. The outcome will depend on the evidence presented during the proceedings.

Mother Discovers Horrific Truth After Husband Claims Their Baby Died in an Accident
Brenda Bondy believed her six-week-old daughter had died in a tragic accident after her husband claimed he had fallen down the stairs while holding the baby. An investigation revealed a far more disturbing story, and Wayne McBride was convicted of first-degree murder. Decades later, Brenda is still campaigning for tougher treatment of offenders who harm children.
In 1985, Brenda Bondy received a phone call at work that would change her life forever. Her husband, Wayne McBride, told her that he thought their baby daughter, Alecia, was dead.
Brenda rushed home, where she found her husband holding the infant. He claimed he had fallen down the stairs while carrying her, breaking her neck.
Brenda desperately tried to revive her daughter, but Alecia could not be saved.
What initially appeared to be a tragic accident soon became a criminal investigation that exposed a devastating betrayal.
A Young Mother Trusted Her Husband
Brenda met McBride when she was 16 and he was 25. She later described him as charming, and her family initially welcomed him into their lives.
The couple married when Brenda turned 18, and their daughter was born four months later. They were living with Brenda’s parents in Ontario, Canada, while trying to save enough money to establish a home of their own.
Brenda returned to her marketing job when Alecia was just five weeks old. McBride worked nights and agreed to care for the baby during the day.
Although he appeared attentive, Brenda later recalled that he seemed unusually possessive of their daughter. She also noticed that Alecia sometimes became unsettled when he held her.
At the time, Brenda did not understand what those behaviors might mean.
The Investigation Revealed the Truth
After Alecia’s death, police investigated McBride’s explanation that he had accidentally injured the infant.
A post-mortem examination determined that Alecia had died from a brain hemorrhage. Investigators also found evidence of sexual abuse.
Brenda was devastated when detectives explained what the examination had revealed. She later learned that McBride had sexually abused their daughter and inflicted the injuries that led to her death.
According to Brenda’s account, McBride had seriously injured Alecia before leaving for work. When Brenda went to work the following morning, she believed the baby was sleeping in her bassinet, unaware of the severity of her condition.
McBride was arrested and charged with first-degree murder.
Brenda later recalled the overwhelming grief of saying goodbye to her daughter before the infant was buried in a small white coffin.
McBride Was Sentenced to Life in Prison
McBride was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life imprisonment, with no possibility of parole for 15 years.
Although the judge referred to the sexual abuse during the trial, McBride was not separately convicted of sexual offenses in connection with Alecia’s death.
Brenda later expressed anger over what she considered an insufficient punishment, particularly given the circumstances surrounding her daughter’s death.
McBride was released from prison in 2009 after serving approximately 24 years.
Mother’s Online Investigation Raises New Concerns
Brenda’s concerns about her former husband resurfaced years after his release.
According to The Sun, McBride later breached his parole conditions and returned to custody. He was subsequently granted full parole in April 2024.
In January 2025, Brenda became concerned after noticing his online activity and a new connection on social media that she believed might violate his parole conditions.
She reported her concerns to authorities, and McBride was imprisoned again. He was released once more in May 2025.
Brenda’s actions renewed her determination to speak publicly about the risks she believes can arise when people convicted of serious crimes against children are released.
Campaigning for Tougher Sentences
Brenda has since rebuilt her life, remarried and raised two more children. She has also made sure they know about their older sister, Alecia, whose life ended before she had the chance to grow up.
For Brenda, the case is not only about the loss of her daughter but also about the decisions made by the justice system when dealing with offenders who commit serious crimes against children.
She believes some crimes warrant permanent imprisonment and has called for tougher sentences and greater scrutiny of parole decisions.
More than four decades after Alecia’s death, Brenda continues to share her story in the hope that other families will be protected and that her daughter’s memory will not be forgotten.
