California Man Sentenced to 100 Years to Life for Killing His Parents After Family Argument

Julian McElhaney, 27, was sentenced to 100 years to life in prison after admitting to killing his parents, William and Sylvia McElhaney, in their Fresno home in 2022. During sentencing, a relative recalled the father’s haunting remark about his son: “That boy will be the death of me.”

A Family Argument Ended in Two Deaths

A California man has been sentenced to spend the rest of his life in prison after fatally shooting both of his parents following an argument at their family home.

Julian McElhaney, of Fresno, received the sentence on October 16, 2026, after pleading no contest to two counts of first-degree murder and admitting firearm enhancements.

The killings occurred on April 10, 2022. Fresno police officers responded to reports of gunfire at the family’s home in northeast Fresno.

When officers arrived, they found William McElhaney, 55, dead in the front yard and Sylvia McElhaney, 64, dead inside the house. Both had suffered multiple gunshot wounds.

According to prosecutors, Julian called 911 and reported that he had shot someone. Officers detained him at the scene, and he later admitted to killing his parents after an argument.

Father’s Haunting Words Recalled in Court

One of the most emotional moments during sentencing came when Alberta Cruz, Sylvia’s sister-in-law, recalled a previous conversation involving William and his son.

Cruz told the court that William had once asked Julian for help, only to be met with profanity during the exchange.

Afterward, William reportedly told Cruz’s son, “That boy will be the death of me.”

During the sentencing hearing, Cruz addressed Julian directly, reflecting on how tragically the remark had come to resonate after the killings.

“And look what you did,” she said. “You were the death of him. Two beautiful people taken away from the family that they loved.”

Her statement captured the grief and disbelief that relatives continue to experience following the deaths of William and Sylvia.

Relatives Describe Lasting Family Pain

Other family members also spoke about the impact of the killings and the loss of two loved ones.

Rudy Cruz, the victims’ nephew, described how the consequences of the murders would continue to affect the family for years to come.

“The ripple effects of what you did will forever live in the rest of our lives,” he told the court.

William’s sister, Pollyanna McElhaney, also addressed the court, emphasizing that accountability and compassion could exist together without diminishing the seriousness of what had happened.

The statements illustrated how the killings had affected not only the victims’ immediate family but also a wider circle of relatives who must now rebuild their lives without them.

Defendant Receives 100 Years to Life

Judge Daniel Brickey imposed the sentence following a plea agreement reached in September 2026.

McElhaney received 100 years to life in state prison. He also was ordered to pay a $10,000 restitution fine and $15,000 to the California Victim Compensation Board, with additional restitution potentially to be determined later.

McElhaney did not address the court during the sentencing hearing.

According to reporting from ABC30, his attorney said he had expressed remorse in a letter to the family and had participated in work assignments while in custody. His attorney also described changes he had made during more than four years in jail.

The plea agreement included a waiver of appellate rights, according to local reporting.

A Tragedy That Changed a Family Forever

The sentence brings the criminal proceedings to a major milestone, but it cannot undo the loss suffered by the McElhaney and Cruz families.

Relatives spoke of the challenge of moving forward while continuing to remember William and Sylvia and the lives they shared with those closest to them.

For them, the sentencing hearing was not simply the conclusion of a criminal case. It was also an opportunity to describe the lasting consequences of the killings and the absence of two family members.

Julian McElhaney will spend at least the remainder of his life in prison under the sentence, while his relatives continue to cope with the devastating loss of William and Sylvia McElhaney.
