IDF Kills Hamas Terrorist Linked to Shani Louk’s Kidnapping During October 7 Attack

More than three years after the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack that shocked Israel and the world, the Israeli military says it has killed a Hamas operative involved in the kidnapping of 22-year-old Shani Louk. The Israel Defense Forces announced that Tamer Mohammad Ibrahim Al-Zabaq was killed in an airstrike in the Jabalia area of the Gaza Strip on October 19, 2026. According to the military, Al-Zabaq had crossed into Israeli territory during the October 7 assault and participated in the massacre, including the abduction of Louk.

Shani Louk, German-Israeli Hamas hostage who has past link to Portland, is confirmed dead in Gaza

Louk, a German-Israeli dual citizen and tattoo artist, had been attending the Nova music festival near Re’im when Hamas-led attackers stormed the area. The festival became one of the deadliest scenes of the October 7 assault, with hundreds of people killed or abducted. Images and videos showing Louk’s body being transported through the streets of Gaza in the back of a pickup truck spread rapidly across the world. The footage sparked international outrage and became one of the most widely recognized images from the attack.

At the time, her family and supporters feared she had been taken hostage while still alive. However, in late October 2023, Israeli forensic examiners confirmed her death after identifying a fragment of her skull. Her remains were later recovered by Israeli soldiers operating in Gaza in May 2024 and returned to her family for burial. The discovery brought an end to months of uncertainty for her loved ones, who had continued searching for answers about her fate.

The IDF said Al-Zabaq continued advancing attacks against Israeli troops after October 7 and attempted to rebuild Hamas terrorist infrastructure in Gaza. His reported involvement in Louk’s kidnapping placed him among the individuals Israel had been pursuing for their roles in the attack. The military did not publicly provide further details about the intelligence or operational circumstances leading to the airstrike, but confirmed that he was killed on Monday.

For Shani Louk’s family, the announcement marks another development in the long aftermath of a tragedy that became a symbol of the brutality of October 7. Her image was shared around the world, drawing attention to the hostages and victims whose lives were forever changed by the assault. Although the reported killing of a man linked to her abduction cannot undo what happened, it represents another chapter in Israel’s continuing effort to track down those it holds responsible for the attack.
