Mom, 58, Mauled by 9-Foot Alligator During Family Boat Trip — Terrifying 911 Calls Capture Desperate Fight to Save Her
A family outing on a Florida river turned into a nightmare when a 58-year-old mother was suddenly attacked by a massive alligator in front of relatives and nearby swimmers. The animal clamped down on her arm, leaving her with devastating injuries as witnesses rushed to pull her from the water. Newly released emergency calls reveal the panic that followed, with callers desperately trying to explain the severity of her condition and get medical help to the scene.

The victim, Dina Rae Spann, was enjoying a family boating trip on the Silver River in Marion County on August 8, 2026, when the alligator attacked. According to accounts from her family, Dina fought back with her bare hands, trying to keep the animal from reaching her legs. Her son, Zach Guerrina, later explained that she lost part of her left ring finger before the alligator clamped onto her right arm. She struggled to keep her head above water and tried to hold the animal’s mouth shut while fighting to survive.
Two 911 calls released months after the incident captured the terrifying aftermath. In one recording, a woman can be heard telling the dispatcher that someone had been bitten by an alligator and that the victim’s arm was badly damaged, reportedly hanging by only a small amount of tissue. Another caller later stated bluntly that her arm was gone. As people nearby tried to help, relatives and witnesses struggled to get Dina out of the water and onto a boat.
One of the people who rushed to help was John Gamache, who had been having lunch with his father on a nearby boat. He told local media that he saw the alligator moving rapidly toward the swimmers, with its head visible above the water. By the time he reached Dina, the animal had released her and moved away. Gamache found her holding onto a paddleboard amid a scene of panic, with blood visible in the water. He and his father helped rescue the swimmers and children, then used a rope as a tourniquet to control the bleeding from Dina’s severely injured arm before taking the group to a nearby boat launch. Emergency responders transported her to a hospital.

Dina survived, but the consequences were life-changing. Doctors had to amputate her right arm below the elbow, and she also lost part of her left ring finger. Her family later confirmed that she had been discharged from the hospital. In September, Dina shared a video showing her injuries and the loss of her arm, accompanied by a message that reflected her determination to move forward: “The gator got a piece of me. It didn’t get the best of me.” Her recovery has become a story of resilience after an attack that could easily have ended in tragedy.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission removed a 9-foot-8-inch alligator from the river the day after the attack. Although the animal’s size was reported by authorities, the available reports do not establish whether it was definitively identified as the specific alligator responsible. The newly released emergency recordings have brought renewed attention to the incident, offering a glimpse into the fear and urgency experienced by Dina’s family and the strangers who stepped in to help. What began as a relaxing family day on the water became a fight for survival — one Dina managed to win, despite injuries that will remain with her for the rest of her life.
