Meghan Markle Calls for Justice as Estranged Father Thomas Markle Is Arrested and Charged in Child Abuse Material Case

Thomas Markle, the estranged father of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, has been arrested in Florida and charged with possessing child sexual abuse material, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. The 82-year-old was taken into custody on Friday, November 6, following an investigation involving authorities in the United States and the Philippines. The case has drawn renewed attention after Meghan previously spoke publicly about the allegations, saying she hoped justice would be served and that the safety of children must remain the priority.

According to federal prosecutors, Markle is accused of keeping child sexual abuse material in two storage units in the Los Angeles area that he had rented for nearly two decades. FBI agents reportedly seized approximately 78 items, including slides, film negatives and books. The Justice Department said two images allegedly depicted an adult man, identified by a witness as Markle, with a nude prepubescent girl. Another image reportedly showed a nude child in a room believed to be in the Philippines. The evidence and identifying details remain subject to the ongoing legal process.

The investigation reportedly began after allegations surfaced in October 2026, when Markle’s son, Thomas Markle Jr., contacted authorities in the Philippines. He claimed to have discovered disturbing material among his father’s belongings after Markle had left the country. Philippine officials confirmed that their authorities were investigating, while the FBI said it would assist where appropriate and examine any possible violations of U.S. federal law. Investigators also examined belongings linked to Markle in Mexico, making the case an international inquiry spanning several countries.

Meghan had already addressed the allegations publicly on October 23, saying she was deeply distressed by the reports and thinking of any children who may have been harmed. She also explained that she had been aware of troubling allegations about her father since 2018, when a letter was reportedly sent to London’s Metropolitan Police and Royalty and Specialist Protection Command. Meghan said she had been assured the allegations were being investigated. She emphasized that her decision to remain estranged from her father and prevent him from having contact with her children, Archie and Lilibet, was made to protect them. Following his arrest, ABC News reported that Meghan was not expected to make a further comment.

Thomas Markle has previously denied the allegations, describing them as lies and insisting he could not have committed the acts alleged. He has not been convicted. The federal complaint charges him with one count of possessing child pornography, an offense that carries a potential sentence of up to 20 years in prison if he is convicted. He is expected to appear in federal court in Tampa, Florida, as the case moves forward.

For Meghan, the arrest brings a new development in a family situation that has remained deeply strained for years. Her public statement has focused on the children who may have been harmed and the importance of protecting vulnerable victims. Meanwhile, investigators continue examining the seized material and the circumstances surrounding the allegations. The legal process will determine whether the accusations against Thomas Markle can be proven in court.
