School Evacuated Just Hours Before First Day in New Building After Chemical Spill Sparks Emergency Response
A school in County Durham, England, was forced to evacuate after a chemical spill triggered an emergency response involving firefighters wearing hazardous-materials protective suits. The incident happened just hours before pupils were expected to enter the school’s new building for the first time, turning what should have been an exciting milestone into an unexpected safety scare.

The incident occurred on Monday, November 2, at Greenfield Academy in Newton Aycliffe. Staff were making final preparations to transfer equipment and resources into the new premises following the half-term holiday when a chemical spill took place. As a precaution, the entire building was evacuated, and emergency crews were called to assess the situation.
Firefighters wearing bright yellow protective suits arrived at the scene, with four fire appliances responding to the incident. Their presence raised concerns among parents and residents, particularly because the school was preparing to welcome children into the new facilities. The following day, pupils were required to learn remotely while emergency responders and specialist teams worked to deal with the situation.
School officials subsequently brought in specialist contractors to clean the affected area and carry out safety checks. Parents had questioned whether the building would be safe for children to occupy after the incident. However, school leaders said the necessary assessments had been completed and the premises had been declared safe.

James Keating, executive headteacher at Greenfield Academy, confirmed that the spill occurred during the transfer of equipment and resources. He said the school followed established safety procedures, evacuated the building and worked with County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service to manage the incident. Specialist contractors then completed the cleaning and safety inspections.
Despite the frightening scenes, the school confirmed that pupils could move into the new building as planned after the half-term break. Keating described the opening as an important milestone for the school community, saying the new facilities would provide exciting opportunities for students in the years ahead. Durham Police did not attend the incident, and no injuries were reported.
Although the emergency response initially sparked concern, school officials have reassured families that the affected area was assessed and the building was safe to occupy. What began as a potentially alarming incident ultimately ended without reported injuries, allowing the school to proceed with its long-awaited move into its new home.
