Stranded on a Pile of Soaked Books, a Tiny Tabby Kitten Is Lifted From a Flooded Library

Public Library, October 3, 2024 — 3:42 PM. Muddy water stood across the floor of the flooded public library, lapping at the tall wooden shelves while hardcover books drifted past the concrete columns. On a small pile of soaked volumes near the stacks — the only dry ground left at that end of the hall — sat a tiny gray-and-white tabby kitten, its fur wet and clumped, its ears slightly lowered, its large round eyes fixed on the rescuer approaching through the water.
Chest-mounted bodycam footage, timestamped 2024-10-03 15:42:11, captures the rescue entirely from the rescuer’s point of view. A flood rescue worker in a bright yellow waterproof suit with reflective details, thick black waterproof gloves and a black utility harness wades slowly toward the books, both gloved hands extended.
The kitten blinks and looks from one hand to the other. Ripples spread around the book pile as the rescuer draws closer. One hand touches the kitten’s side gently; the other slides beneath its chest and abdomen — and a faint, trusting meow answers over the sound of dripping pipes and moving water.
With full support beneath its small body, the rescuer lifts the kitten clear of the books. Its tiny paws curl naturally as droplets fall from its soaked fur. Then the kitten is drawn securely against the yellow waterproof jacket and carried toward a dry elevated platform, blinking calmly in the final frames while floating books and the red glow of distant emergency lights shimmer across the water behind them.
