Talented 24-Year-Old Church Organist Found Dead in Duffel Bag After Chilling Surveillance Video Shows Two People Dumping His Body

A 24-year-old Ghanaian musician who was remembered for his extraordinary dedication to church music has been identified as the man whose body was discovered inside a large duffel bag abandoned on a Brooklyn sidewalk. Joseph Owusu’s death has devastated his family and community, while disturbing surveillance footage showing two people leaving the heavy bag on a deserted street has raised urgent questions about what happened to him.

Owusu’s body was discovered on the morning of October 30, 2026, in the Canarsie neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. A person searching for scrap metal reportedly came across the large black bag and moved it using a small cart before realizing it contained a human body. Police responded to the scene and pronounced the man dead. His identity was later confirmed by his family and Ghanaian officials, although the circumstances surrounding his death remain under investigation.

Surveillance footage from the area reportedly captured a white sedan pulling up during the early morning hours. Two people then appeared to remove a large, heavy bag from the vehicle’s trunk and drag it onto the sidewalk. The individuals struggled with the weight before returning to the car and driving away. Hours later, another person searching for recyclable materials was seen collecting the bag with a dolly, unaware of what was inside. The footage has become a crucial part of the investigation, but Owusu’s brother, Kojo Yeboah, said he has watched it repeatedly and still cannot recognize either person.

Beyond the disturbing circumstances of his death, Owusu was remembered as a deeply dedicated musician and a beloved member of his church. He served as an organist at Ghana United Methodist Church in the Bronx, where he had grown up playing music. His brother said Owusu could spend hours practicing, determined not to make mistakes. Church member Daniel Obeng also recalled that Owusu was so skilled he could step in and lead the music whenever the choir director was absent. According to Ghana’s diplomatic mission, he also worked as a caregiver supporting people with disabilities and was studying computer science.

His family is now struggling to understand how a young man with so much ahead of him could lose his life in such unexplained circumstances. Yeboah said he wants investigators to uncover the truth and identify the people seen in the video. The Ghanaian government has also expressed concern and indicated it would work with U.S. authorities as the investigation continues. A fundraising campaign has been established to help support the grieving family.

As of November 6, no arrests had been announced, and authorities had not publicly confirmed how Owusu died. The medical investigation was still ongoing, leaving his relatives without answers about what led to his death or who was responsible. For those who knew him, the loss is not simply that of a young musician, but of a son, brother and friend whose life was cut tragically short.
