Trapped Above the Floodwater, a Tiny Orange Kitten Is Lifted From a Greenhouse Shelf to Safety

Damaged Greenhouse, October 22, 2024 — 11:26 AM. Rain was hammering the glass roof of a storm-damaged greenhouse, dripping through the broken panels and pooling across the flooded floor. Pots lay overturned in the muddy water, seedlings scattered, leaves floating — and on a narrow metal plant shelf, surrounded by green leaves and small white flowers, sat a tiny orange tabby kitten, completely soaked, its fluffy fur clumped and dripping, its round blue-gray eyes locked on the approaching rescuer.
Chest-mounted bodycam footage, timestamped 2024-10-22 11:26:54, captures the rescue from the rescuer’s own point of view. A rescue worker in a dark forest-green waterproof jacket, black protective gloves and a utility harness with metal clips wades slowly through the flooded greenhouse, both hands extended toward the shelf.
The kitten does not run. It watches. It blinks. Then it gives a soft meow — faint under the rain on the glass, the dripping water and the rustling leaves.
One gloved hand comes up beside the kitten’s chest. The other eases in to support its side. The kitten takes one cautious step forward — a single small, dripping paw on the wet metal. Then, with practiced care — one hand beneath the chest, one beneath the hindquarters — the rescuer scoops the kitten gently off the shelf, water falling from its soaked fur in thin streams.
The kitten is drawn in securely against the rescuer’s chest. As the rescuer turns slowly toward the greenhouse exit and the raised walkway beyond, the kitten looks straight into the camera — and blinks, calmly this time. Behind them, the ruined greenhouse fades into the rain: flooded aisles, broken pots, and one empty shelf where a very small survivor used to wait.
