43-Year-Old Man Killed After Object Smashes Through His Windshield on Highway — Police Search for Those Responsible

A peaceful early-morning drive turned fatal for a 43-year-old Connecticut man after an object crashed through his windshield while he was traveling along a highway. Investigators believe the object may have been thrown or dropped from an overpass above the road, and they are now asking the public for help identifying whoever was involved.

The victim, Todd Atkins, was driving southbound on Route 15 in Woodbridge, Connecticut, around 5:30 a.m. on October 31, 2026. According to a statement released by his family, the object apparently came from the Route 114 (Racebrook Road) overpass above the Heroes Tunnel before smashing through his windshield. Atkins suffered fatal blunt-force trauma to his torso and was rushed to Yale New Haven Hospital, where he later died.

Connecticut State Police launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Their preliminary findings indicate that Atkins’ vehicle may have been struck by an object that appeared to have been dropped from the overpass onto the southbound lanes of Route 15. Authorities have not publicly confirmed exactly what the object was or how it came to fall onto the highway. The medical examiner determined that Atkins died from blunt-force trauma to his torso, but the manner of death was not determined.

Investigators have been reviewing surveillance footage from the area and have identified a possible vehicle of interest. According to police, the vehicle is described as a light-colored SUV, and detectives are working to locate it and make contact with the person or people who may have information. No suspect has been publicly identified, and no arrests or charges have been announced in connection with Atkins’ death.

Atkins’ family is now appealing for witnesses to come forward, particularly anyone who was driving near the Route 15 and Route 114 overpass around the time of the incident. Police are also asking motorists to check their dashcam recordings for potentially useful footage. His family remembered him as an intelligent, caring man who loved the outdoors, enjoyed driving and would go out of his way to help others. They described his death as devastating and urged anyone with information to assist investigators.

For Atkins’ loved ones, the loss has left painful questions about how an ordinary drive could end in such a sudden tragedy. Authorities continue to investigate whether the object was deliberately thrown or dropped from the bridge, and they are urging anyone who witnessed something unusual that morning to contact Connecticut State Police.
