Woman Storms High School Football Field and Allegedly Chokes Teen Player During Third-Quarter Brawl

A high school football game in Kentucky took a frightening turn when a female spectator allegedly rushed onto the field and attacked a teenage player, grabbing him by the neck and violently shaking him. The incident unfolded during a chaotic third-quarter confrontation involving players and spectators from both teams, ultimately forcing officials to stop the game before it could be completed.

The incident occurred on October 30, 2026, during a matchup between Wayne County High School and North Laurel High School in Monticello, Kentucky. According to police, officers were dispatched to the Wayne County emergency room after receiving a report of an assault involving a football player. The student-athlete was being evaluated for injuries sustained during the game. Investigators later determined that a female spectator had allegedly approached the player from behind and strangled him during the confrontation.

Authorities identified the suspect as 36-year-old Kayla Barrett of East Bernstadt, Kentucky. According to an arrest warrant cited by local media, Barrett allegedly placed both hands around the back of the player’s neck and violently shook him in an attempt to obstruct his airway. The victim, who is a minor, reportedly told investigators that he struggled to breathe during the attack and required medical evaluation afterward. Police said several people witnessed the alleged assault, and video footage obtained from the North Laurel football program reportedly showed Barrett near the location where the incident occurred.

The attack took place amid a wider disturbance on the field. With 6 minutes and 34 seconds remaining in the third quarter, players became involved in a scuffle near the North Laurel sideline. Spectators from both sides then entered the field, creating an increasingly chaotic scene. Officials ultimately called off the game. North Laurel was leading 21–12 at the time and was later awarded the victory. The school’s coach expressed disappointment that the teams were unable to finish the contest, saying the focus needed to return to playing football and keeping emotions under control.

Following the investigation, Monticello police filed a criminal complaint against Barrett, and an arrest warrant was issued. Kentucky State Police arrested her on November 3, and she was taken to the Laurel County Detention Center. She was charged with felony second-degree strangulation. According to reports, a judge later allowed her release under conditions that included a prohibition on attending any school sporting events in Kentucky. Her next court appearance was scheduled for December 7, 2026.

The Monticello Police Department emphasized that school sporting events should remain safe environments for student-athletes, coaches, officials and spectators. Authorities said that strong emotions during competitive games could never justify physical violence. The investigation remains ongoing, and Barrett has not been convicted. What began as a high school football rivalry ended with a player needing medical attention, a game being abandoned and a spectator facing a felony charge.
